Lady Modiford's is a Church of England Voluntary Aided school. Within this specifically Christian environment, we aim to provide religious education in accordance with our school vision and values, which are central to the life and ethos. 

We aim to enable children to develop spiritual understanding, to begin to comprehend what it means to be a person of faith, and to accept and value those whose commitments, values and ways of life are different from their own promoting good and caring relationships with others.

We follow the RE Agreed Syllabus for Devon and Torbay, which incorporates Understanding Christianity. The syllabus enables the children to develop their understanding of Christianity, alongside their understanding of the world and their own experience within it. The children learn about the world’s main religions, gaining a greater awareness, understanding and respect for different faiths and cultures. This provides a holistic and balanced RE curriculum. Every year each class learn about Christianity and another world religion.

Class topics are linked to the RE topics when possible. The children are given the opportunity to discuss and reflect upon world events as and when they happen, both as individual classes, and as a whole school in Collective Worship.

Intent

We aim to provide Religious Education in accordance with the Christian values of our school, which are central to its life and ethos, and are vital to the realisation of our vision. Through Religious Education, we aim that all pupils make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs. We aim for the children to understand the impact and significance of religious and non-religious beliefs. We aim for the children to make connections between religious and non-religious beliefs, concepts, practices and ideas studied.

Implementation

RE lessons are planned around the Devon and Torbay Agreed Syllabus for Religious education 2019-2024 and Understanding Christianity. The teaching and learning approach has three core elements: Making Sense of Beliefs, Making Connections and Understanding the Impact. These three core elements are woven together to provide breadth and balance within teaching and learning about religions and beliefs. As a Church of England school, Christianity is the majority religion studied in each year group and is at least 50% of the RE curriculum time. A carefully crafted rolling programme ensures that all children learn about Christianity alongside other world religions e.g. Judaism, Islam and Hinduism. Teachers plan their lessons using a range of approaches including debates and diary writing and is linked with other curriculum subjects including art and design technology.

Impact

As a result of their time at Lady Modiford's , the children will develop inquisitive minds, respect, tolerance and understanding of all those around them and themselves. The children will develop the ability to describe, explain and reflect upon the beliefs of different world religions. The children will recognise that these beliefs and practices are important to people of these faiths and that they impact the way they live their lives. The children will recognise that the different routines and lifestyle of people of a particular faith can vary.
